Abstract

Asparagus seeding need suitable medium composition in order that seedlings can grow well and proper to be planted. The experiment aims to study the effect of different seedlings medium and various compost compositions within the medium on growth of asparagus seedlings planted in polybag. The experiment was conducted in research station of Agriculture Faculty, Universitas Padjadjaran, Jatinangor, Sumedang, located at 730 m above the sea level, conducted from May 2013 up to August 2013. A factorial randomized blocks design was used with four replications. The First factor was different seedlings medium, which consisted of three levels: rice husk, rice husk charcoal and rice husk charcoal hydroponics waste, and the second factor was compost composition within seedlings medium which consisted of three levels: 50 %, 33 %, and 25 %. The resultsshowed that there was no interaction effect between compost composition and different seedlings medium on all variable tested but there were significant effect in each factor. Asparagus seedlings planted in rice husk charcoal hydroponic waste medium produced a longer root lenght compared to another seedlings medium, whereas seedlings planted in rice husk charcoal medium have more roots number, higher weight and volume of crown than in rice husk medium, but same as in rice husk charcoal hydroponic waste and have a heavier seedlings weight than another seedlings medium. Seedlings planted in 50 % compost composition produced more stem number compared to another compost composition.
